Share your love of bats and spread the word that bats aren't scary- they're spectacular!

Bats! They’re often depicted as dark, mysterious, and scary. But do bats themselves feel this way?

Bats live long lives, communicate, and enjoy strong social bonds. Some bats have colorful fur and ears. Bats are pollinators and seed dispersers and help maintain insect populations.

I created cheerful designs featuring friendly-looking bats to show bats from a different point of view. I hope these happy bats can help combat many people’s negative misconceptions about bats.

As of March 2024, I am donating 10% off all Happy Bat Pin sales to Merlin Tuttle’s Bat Conservation.

About the Happy Bat Fan Club

Happy Bat Fan Club is a creative project by Molly Schafer, a.k .a. Feral Pony.

Over the years, I have created comics, bumper stickers, and art featuring bats. I even named my band after them as a teenager. Along the way, I’ve met other bat fans. I’ve also encountered a lot of misconceptions and negative opinions about bats.

I decided to combat these negative misconceptions about bats with colorful drawings of happy-looking bats. And it has been a lot of fun!

Once you learn about bats, they sound different from the brooding, angst-filled characters they inspire in books and movies. For example:

  • Bats live long lives, form social bonds, and have sophisticated bat-to-bat communication.

  • Bats are helpful heroes of the ecosystem, working as pollinators and seed dispersers and keeping mosquito populations down.

  • Bats can be colorful. There are bats with orange fur, white fur, yellow ears, and spotted fur!

  • Bats range in size from the tiny, one-inch-long bumblebee bat to the giant golden-crowned flying fox with a five-foot wingspan.

  • Bat species have a variety of diets. Different species have different diets, including fruit, flower nectar, and insects, and some bats even catch fish!

  • There are over 1400 species of bats, and only three species are vampires. They are small bats and only feed for a few minutes and do not cause serious harm or discomfort to their prey. Female vampire bats even help each other survive by sharing food with their friends.

So share some bat facts and spread the word that bats are nice!
