Spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula, is an invasive insect introduced in Pennsylvania in 2014.
“These insatiable insects feed on more than 70 different plant species and leave a sticky honeydew residue that promotes mold and fungi growth. Spotted lanternflies pose a serious threat to the orchard, grape, hardwood, nursery, and landscape industries in the U.S.”
Ailanthus altissima or tree-of-heaven is a common invasive plant and a primary host plant for spotted lanternfly. Ailanthus reproduces quickly, out-competing beneficial native plants while providing habitat for spotted lanternfly. Removal of ailanthus trees is well worth the effort.
This image was created for an article I wrote for Mt. Cuba Center titled The Life Cycle of the Spotted Lanternfly which talks about spotted lanternfly identification and prevention.
Stickers of the graphic are available here at activist-friendly prices if you’d like to raise awareness in your area.
Another great source of spotted lanternfly information is your local college cooperative extension or USDA APHIS. Some areas may be under quarantine orders for this #hitchhikerbug so be sure to find out what the status of spotted lanternfly is in your area!
